O brother o sister (one week) is a work that attempted to temporarily open up the lines of communication between siblings Mary Novack and John Novack.

Beginning Wednesday, February 24, 2010, both Mary and John recorded “the best thing” they saw each day for one week. Each artist interpreted the phrase “best thing” in his and her own way. They documented using words and drawings. Each artist then shipped their documentation to the other artist.

Mary displayed John’s words and images along with photocopies of the words and images that she sent him at Alexander Hall on March 8th, 2010.

Part I. Savannah, GA
I gave out 5 disposable cameras along with a letter explaining my intentions to 5 local Savannah residents. The letter asked the recipient to simply go for a walk, to leave from one point and walk for an hour, and at the end of the hour turn around and walk back. They were to be open to any distractions during the walk, and were to use the camera to take at least one photo.

Once the cameras were returned to me, I developed the film and posted it online, as well as displayed it publicly at an open studio in Savannah, Georgia. (Photos of installation above)

Part II. Elsewhere
I sent out disposable cameras with the same letters to people outside of Savannah. If the recipient chose to participate, after receiving the camera I developed the film and again posted the photos online. The first seven participants from outside of Savannah also had their photos displayed in Alexander Hall in Savannah, Georgia.

My desire is that this project would give people an opportunity to partake in an activity that is outside of their normal schedule. I am interested in their experience, and what will happen when they are asked to take a two hour block of time to think of nothing else but looking and walking.

If you would like to participate, please contact me at maryelisesnow@gmail.com.

On February 26, 2010, from 9:45 p.m. until 10:57 p.m., three artists, Zach Martin, Mary Novack, and Jolie Peters cut one hundred pounds of white onions in studio B11 of Alexander Hall. They stood behind a table, draped with a white tablecloth and began cutting. Zach, Mary and Jolie began crying. The audience began crying. Three white boxes stood on shelves mounted to the wall. They filled the boxes with onion. After approximately an hour and twelve minutes, when the artists cut the last onion, filled the last box, and walked out of the room, the performance was over.

When art is experienced, bodily signs like a flushed face and tears rolling down cheeks are indicators to other viewers that the work is having such an emotional effect that it is affecting the viewer physically. Viewers are sometimes not conscious of those effects until there are others there to perceive them. When the viewer becomes conscious of their perceived emotional state, they can then become aware of their genuine feelings towards the presented work.”
